Halayt Dance

The word “halayt” has several meanings (see Glossary). One of the primary meanings is a dance performed by a shaman or a chief.

Traditionally, when shamans danced their halayt, they were demonstrating their supernatural powers or conducting healings. Similarly, when a chief dances his halayt, he is dramatizing his supernatural names and their origins, and invoking the power of his supernatural guides (the “nax̱noḵ”).

Halayt dances are usually presented at feasts, but they may also be presented during other ceremonial events.
